When I try to edit (like cropping) a photo in Aperture the wheel keeps spinning and the photo turns black. I can't do anything with my pictures. Any thoughts?
How about providing more data such as; which Mac, what version of OS X and what version of Aperture?
... when did the problem begin, has it ever happened before, can you think of any reason it might be happening, have you changed any photographic or computer equipment or software recently, what have you done so far to trouble-shoot, and what has been the result?
Does the problem recur after restarting Aperture?
Does the problem recur after rebooting your computer?
When was the last time you repaired your Library?
If you are using Aperture 2 with MacOS X 10.7 or later update to the latest version of Aperture 3,that is compatible with your system.
I am using Aperture 2.1 with MacOS 10.9. But should I spend $80.00 to update Aperture, if Apple no longer supports it?
Or should I just move over to Lightroom and Photoshop?
Aperture 2 is not supported on 10.9, hasn't really worked well on any system since 10.6.

First off Aperture is still supported by Apple and will be at least through Yosemite. So that isn;t an issue.
As to whether you should spend the money is really up to you, no one here can say if it is worth it for you. The only thing that can be said is you can't use Aperture 2 on 10.9
