Keyboard shortcut command-w stopped working after upgrading to OSX 10.9.4

Dear all,

after upgrading to OSX 10.9.4 the keyboard shortcut command-w stops working after about 30 min of having the machine powered on. Interestingly, this phenomenon is not restricted to a certain app (Safari, etc.).

In system preferences > keyboard all settings have been set to "default".

Anybody else having the same issue?

Many thanks,

Hi Barney-15E,

thanks for your rapid reply.

First option Console app: unfortunately, Console recorded nothing. Conversely, using command-Q to quit i.e. Safari recorded something.

Second option Safe Mode: here, everything seems to work fine.

Strangely, this phenomenon occurs after about 20 min. But I will do some more testing since my guess is that it conflicts with other recently installed apps i.e. 1Password. Will keep you posted about results.

Great thanks,

wolf

Hi Barney-15E,

you were definitely right.

In "system preferences > users & groups > login items" I detected a couple of items that are loaded during startups. Some of them were flagged with a yellow warning sign indicating that OSX either did not recognize them or are deprecated. After deleting all such flagged items using the minus sign ( - ) at the bottom of the table, the keyboard shortcut command-w now seems to work fine in all apps (Finder, Safari, Houdaspot, etc.).

Much appreciated pointing my head to these settings.

Hi folks,

just as quick documentation for possibly other error sources for the problem "shortcut command-w not working":

If problem persists close all applications (allL!). Then open one app like Safari, open several tabs and check whether command-w works.

Reason: it could happen that you've set command-w inadvertently in another app like Snagit. And when setting this the app did not tell you "listen dummy, this is a standard command, do you really want to replace a standard command with a app-specific command. Don't be surprised if it doesn't work when the app is running."

This is what happened to me. So close all apps and check whether problem persists.
