I tried to update my Leopard software from 10.5 to 10.5.8, but it's giving an error message that the package cannot be validated

Hi, that sounds like a bad download, if you tried it through Software Update, might try the big Combo direct download instead...
Repair Permissions twice in a row afterwords, reboot.
