How do I get rid of the red mail count number from e-mail icon?

I have always opened it and took action. Yhis number just appeared with 10, 300 showing in the e-mail folder. It is empty. I can't find a setting to remove it.

I read and delete. but red number remains on Email icon.
Normally the number that appears in the red circle on your Mail app refers to the number of unread emails you have. Sometimes though the Mail app gets confused and doesn't work properly. If you are seeing that big number and are sure that you have no unread emails, then I suggest quitting the Mail app like I describe and then reset your device. Double click the Home button to show the screen with running and recently used apps. Each app icon will have a sample page above it. Flick up on the page (not the app icon) and the page will fly away and the app icon will disappear. This quits that app. Then reset your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. See if that fixes your problem.
What if you delete your mail account and re-add it?
Open your mail app and open the email.
