All thumbnails in browser & timeline are missing and FCPX quits

All my thumbnails have disappeared in the browser and on the timeline inc. waveforms. If I mouse over a clip the thumb appears. If I switch background rendering on nothing happens... no rendering. When I choose quit, FCPX stalls for a minute and it tells me it is stopping background rendering. FCPX then crashes and I get a quit error window.

Editing still works and appears normal except I have no thumbnail images or waveforms. Any ideas anyone?

I am running up to date versions on a new Mac Pro.

Thanks but I tried this before posting. I deleted render files...cache... preferences etc.

Also when I quit I get the message "cancelling background tasks" even though I have no background tasks running or rendering. FCPX then hangs forcing restart.

On restart some thumbnails reappear - about 50%.

I am thinking this may be a memory shortage. I only have 16Gb in a new 8-core Mac Pro. However this really does not explain why thumbnails keep disappearing.
