itunes alternatives now that podcasting is broken?

I am attempting to run iTunes on my Macericks machine. I have used iTunes for downloading podcasts since it was a feature in the product, and have watched as they disabled feature after feature. Now with 11.3, they have officially broken it. New podcasts simply will not download. Based on what I'm seeing in the community, I'm not the only one with this problem. I have tried several potential fixes with no resolution. I am now taking suggestions for third party apps to do the job--preferably something that would still write to my iPod Nano. I will leave the rest of my media in iTunes, but it's clear that Apple no longer wants to support or even allow podcasts.

I was about to post something very much like this. Listening to Podcasts in iTunes has just gotten worse and worse lately.

If I double click on a podcast episode to play it, it automatically goes on to the next one when it's done, and I don't know how to stop this from happening. (Best solution so far is to drop the one I want to play into a playlist and play it from there.)

I've set it to delete podcasts when I'm done. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't.

Half of the podcasts I subscribe to have little exclamation points next to them. There's no explanation of what this means when I hover the cursor over it.

Some podcasts are downloading new episodes, others are just adding them to the list with a little cloud icon telling me I need to download them. This is new.

When I add a new podcast, the list of old episodes doesn't show up, and there's no obvious way to make them show up. (I eventually manage to work it out, but it's not easy.)

Everything used to work just fine. Apple seems to care enough to break it, but not enough to fix it.
