Q: No Trusted Device and Recovery Key

I've lost the iPad that was my only trusted device and lost my Recovery Key. I understand that means I will need to get a new AppleID, but will I lose all of the apps (and credit in the app store)?

From Frequently asked questions about two-step verification for Apple ID :

What do I need to remember when I use two-step verification?

Two-step verification simplifies and strengthens the security of your account. After you turn it on, there's no way for anyone to access and manage your account at My Apple ID other than by using your password, verification codes sent to your trusted devices, or your Recovery Key. You must be responsible for:

    • Remembering your password
    • Keeping your trusted devices physically secure
    • Keeping your Recovery Key in a safe place

If you lose access to two of these three items at the same time, you could be locked out of your Apple ID permanently. With two-step verification turned on, only you can reset your password, manage your trusted devices, or create a new Recovery Key. Apple Support can help you with other aspects of your service, but they aren't able to update or recover these three things for you.

If you forget your password then you won't be able to get it reset, so will lose access to the account's purchases and balance

Thanks. I'm OK for now in a general way, but as is, I can't buy apps without buying them from iTunes on my PC and then syncing. I also can't buy in-app purchases. Not that I've "needed" to, but I've wanted to a few times.

My follow-up is, is there any way to keep what I have and regain the ability to buy in-app?

Not if you've lost two of your three items : Apple ID: Can't sign in with two-step verification

If you lost two or more of the required sign-in items

As noted above, two-step verification requires at least two of the items below to sign in successfully:

    • Your Apple ID password
    • Access to one of your trusted devices
    • Your Recovery Key

If you have permanently lost any two of these items, you will not be able to sign in or regain access to your account. You will need to create a new Apple ID. You can do so on one of your devices or on the web at My Apple ID.
