There doesn't seem to be an end to it. It just keeps going.

This worked. It cleared the printers from the list. However, when I then tried to add the printer, the Mac did not see it as a nearby printer. Clicking the + button still offered me the same old list of printers. I had to go to the IP pane and enter the IP address of the printer. When I did that, the Mac automatically found the proper printer driver. I added it, and printed a test page. Success!
