The remote function is now built-in to the Keynote for iOS app. Please follow the steps in the article below to pair your device.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, this does not do the trick. I am still getting the same thing. Remotes is enabled. They are both on the same (enterprise) network. I have also tried using a personal hotspot with same results. Apps are all updated.
When I attempt to connect from the iOS, it looks for the laptop a bit, I get an exclamation point in a red circle. The message, "Make sure Keynote is open on _________ and that your devices are on same WiFi network." comes up again (they are both on the same network). However, when I tap on "devices" it has my laptop listed and checked as it is connected.
So I am at a loss. I would welcome other things to try.
