Q: Can't put a transition where I want it

This seems like it has to have a simple answer but I couldn't find it. Randomly when I try to add a transition (equally, so half over the outgoing clip and half over the incoming clip) FCE won't let me, it will only let me put the transition 100% on one clip or the other. The two clips in this scenario are both well over the duration of the stock transition (how do you change the default transition length) so I don't see why there is a problem! There's nothing weird I can see about either clip...and there's no .001 seconds of space between them or anything. What's causing this?

Screenshot attached although when I press the key shortcut to screenshot it changes my pointer in Final Cut so it didn't capture the pointer snapping to one clip like it really does.

Thanks!

Usually this happens when one of the clips lacks sufficient 'handles' ... which is the space between the incoming clip's IN point and the clip's actual media start point; or between an outgoing clip's OUT point and the clip's actual media end point.  FCE will not allow you to insert a transition if there are insufficient handles.

If you haven't set IN or OUT points in a clip then there are no handles in the clip.  And since the default transition is 1.0 sec, if the OUT point of the outgoing clip and/or the IN point of the incoming clip are less than 0.5 sec from their respective clips' media start or end points there are insufficient handles for the transition.

If you absolutely cannot set IN or OUT points appropriately so there are handles for the transition, a workaround would be to place the incoming clip on the track above the outgoing clip, overlapping them sufficiently, then use the clip opacity controls to fade out the outgoing clip and fade in the incoming clip.  I know, I know, that's only a manual dissolve transition but that's the only thing I can suggest as a workaround.  Your audio track may need to be adjusted separately.
