what do i do with the disk image icon after downloads?

everytime i download, theres usually a disk image which they tell me to drag into the application folder...which i do but theres still a disk image on my desktop...and when i try to delete it in the trash can it says its still in use??
im so lost i dont know how to properly handle the downloading process!

To be sure we are on the same page, the process is as follows:

A downloaded application is provided as a disk image file which includes a .dmg extension. When double-clicking on the downloaded .dmg file, the disk image is mounted on the Desktop.

To install an application from a mounted disk image that is provided as a bundle without an installer, you drag the application's icon from the mounted disk image to your Applications folder which copies the application to the hard drive.

To unmount the disk image from the Desktop when finished, you can click and drag the mounted disk image to the Trash can in the dock or select the mounted disk image and at the Finder menu bar, go to File and select Eject.

After the disk image is unmounted from the hard drive, you can delete the downloaded .dmg file.

some of the downloads wold let me drag into the app folder on this screen where it tells me to do so on it...some of them i had to do it by dragging the icon on my desktop to the app folder in mac HD...tell me if im doing something wrong...but thats the problem and when i drag it to the app folder in mac HD theres still a copy of it on the desktop and when i try to put it in the trash and empty it, it says i cant because its still in use....im a new mac user as u can tell, so thanks for all your help
