why am i getting a prompt to sign in to iCloud?

Recently I began to receive a prompt on my iPad that asked that I "sign in to iCloud." Below that it further stated "Enter the Apple ID password for 'my user name'. When this first appeared it seemed innocuous because I was able to 'Cancel' the request and it went away. Now it will not go away. I have tried shutting the iPad off and then back on and the prompt will not go away. This strikes me as virus like activity, as before I have had no problem accessing the cloud with Pages and Numbers without signing in. What is going on here?

For absolutely no reason at all, my wife received a prompt on her iPhone today to enter the password for FaceTime which is the password for the Apple ID that we share. My wife has never used FaceTime on her phone. She called to ask me what to do. I told her to enter my password. She did and the prompt went away, as it should Since that is the expected behavior.

My question is.... Did you enter the password as prompted to do so?

As long as you have not hacked your iPad, there is no possibility of a virus.

Is your ID for iCloud the same ID that you use for iTunes purchases? (they typically are, but don't have to be) It could be that if you have two IDs, the one for iCloud is prompting you to log in if you're due for a password reset.

Or, if you use the same ID for purchases and for iCloud, if you recently changed your password it can take a little while before you're prompted to sign back in to all the other services that are linked to that ID (like iCloud, iMessage/FaceTime, Game Center, Home Sharing, etc.) Each of these services can have separate IDs, but if you use the same ID for all then a password change will trigger a prompt to re-sign in to each of these services with the new password.

I just tried to turn off "Find my iPad" on iCloud from the laptop and Find my iPad advises that the iPad is 'Offline'. Does this sound like a hardware failure? Because the iPad is definitely on. Also when I tried to change the setting Find My iPad from the iPad it said something like couldn't verify or couldn't connect. Sounds like the WI-FI has packed up.
