Q: Disk Utility, Mavericks, 2nd-level disk, hangs on "Checking volume bitmap"

Everything up to date. Top-level disk checks out fine with "Verify" but 2nd-level stops at "checking volume bitmap". Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)

Mac OS: Technical overview of disk volume structures

If your mac can boot into Internet recovery (Command Option R) Repair top level of the hard drive.

Or you can run fsck.

Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck
