Q: No start up chime followed by black screen

2011 Apple iMac MC814B/A Desktop Computer, Intel Core i5, 3.1GHz, 8GB RAM, 1TB with 27 Inch Monitor

Took a break from using my iMac for about half hour when I returned the screen had vertical grey lines. I powered off by holding the power button and then restarted. The iMac made the usual start up sounds but there was no chime – the screen remained black. Help, what's happened?

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!

If your computer is not starting up as expected, I would try the troubleshooting outlined in the attached article. Using Safe Boot and Disk Utility would be the first troubleshooting steps I would recommend.

Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck
