Are free apps really free apps?

Dear members

I have a situation where I see a lot of apps that for free but every time i press on one of them, the app vill ask my verification of a payment if click on verification i am brought to a page were my credicard is ending up on the page???

My question is are these apps a scam just to trick you with money or are they really free when they say its a free app???

It happens both on my iPhone and mac book pro!

Sincerely

No, the app is not taking you anywhere. If the app is taking you somewhere then you are already in the app and clicking something in the app.

You are clicking on a link to app in the iTunes store.

What is requesting your credit card? Is the iTunes/Mac App Store requesting this or are you asking with regard to an app with in-app purchases requesting this information? It isn't clear at all what you want to know.

Yes, there are free apps that require an additional in-app purchase to activate more advanced services from the app. It's not a scam, it's how it works.

Thank you kindly for your answers. This credicard card story happens in app store when it is written that it is for free but when you are trying to click on that free app you are later delivered to your credit card page on app store. Yes maybe this just a feature to activate your card if you want to download an app within the app. I think we are close to the answer now 🙂

No, this is not a feature to activate your card if you want to make an in-app purchase. This is to verify that the person using the account to download the free app is really you! Period. It has no other purpose. It is part of the security mechanism built into the system to stop an unauthorized person from using your account. Only you should be able to supply the correct information regarding your credit card.

The need to verify your payment information isn't related directly to the app you wish to download, it is for your iTunes account in general. To access and download or purchase iTunes content, even if free, Apple requires a valid payment method be set up on your account, and as Dah-veed points out, a method of verifying your identity and preventing someone else from using your account without your consent.

You are seriously turning this into something far more complicated than it needs to be.
