Existence of the optical drive?

The laptop I hope to clean up for student use appears not to have an optical drive (powerbook G4) 15" There is a slot but if I attempt to insert a dvd, it is not accepted. I believe this laptop has been disassembled at some time as the screws on the back are not set correctly. Does the failure to accept a disk indicate no drive or a malfunctioning one?
