How to remove an "installed by enterprise policy" extension in Chrome on Macbook?

Child logged onto my Mac with his school gmail on Chrome and now all web searches say "This webpage was blocked by an extension". Went to the Extensions page and it says "This extension is managed and cannot be removed or disabled." It seems it is removable on a PC but I can't find any information on how to remove it from a Mac. Would like to remove it since it is likely a virus.

I had this same problem too and I found out how to fix it.

First, go to the extensions page in Chrome and check the box that says "Developer Mode" in the right hand corner

After clicking this you'll see that each extension has "ID:xxxxxxxxxxx...". You'll need to know what this ID number is later

Next, go into Finder and go into libraries under the user account->application support->Google->Chrome->Profile 1->Extensions

or do command+shift+g and past this in "~/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/Profile 1/Extensions/" without quotes

Each folder you see is an extension and you need to use the ID to know which folder is which extensions.

Delete the folders that you don't want.

Also check in the "sync extension settings" folder and delete any folders with the same ID as the extensions you want to remove

(~/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/Profile 1/Sync Extension Settings)

After you have deleted your folders, quit chrome and empty your trash.

Just to make sure its not running, force quit chrome.

Restart Chrome and you shouldn't see those extensions anymore

I don't think it's a virus.

School accounts, aka "school gmail", can be managed by businesses or organizations, and when you log in, extensions can be installed as a package by the school.

Ask the school if they are force-installing extensions.

If they're not, download Malwarebytes and scan your computer. If there are any unwanted programs, Malwarebytes should detect them and give you a option to remove them.

If you would like to download Malwarebytes, click this link: Malwarebytes Premium | Malware Protection

And download the 30-day trial.

It sounds like your son must have had to install something from the school in order to access his e-mail, which has now gotten your Mac into their enterprise management system. You'll need to contact the school to find out how to fix that.

Also, if you plan to let your son use your Mac again, create a new user account for him (in System Preferences -> Users & Groups) that does not have administrator privileges, so that he can't install anything outside his own account in the future.
