32 bit installer needed for iTunes 11.3

I've already read "iTunes 11.3.0.54 64-bit installer installs 32-bit version" and the reply by by 98103-6936_ on Jul 15, 2014 12:35 PM.

I have iTunes version 11.2.2.3 running as a service on a Windows 2003 server. Hacking the registry on Windows servers is very dangerous.

Why can't Apple Support simply package a 32 bit update that installs like their last revision to version 11.2.2.3?

At the very least they should debug their 64X installer so it doesn't do this on a 32x Windows installation:

Thanks for your consideration.

I'm confused. If you have a 32-bit install of Windows you should not be trying to install using the 64-bit installer. Or vice-versa. The fact that the 64-bit installer installs some 32-bit and some 64-bit code is neither here nor there.

You can find direct links to the current installers in the Further Information area of Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

I downloaded the 64 bit version because:

  1. The earlier posting cited about provided assurances the 64 bit installer would also install 32 bit windows versions, and
  2. BECAUSE APPLE SUPPORT DOESN'T PROVIDE A LINK TO DOWNLOAD AND UNEQUIVOCALLY 32 BIT VERSION OF ITUNES 11.3!!

Either I'm missing something completely obvious, or Apple isn't supporting 32 bit Windows any more.

If that's so, why don't they CLEARLY say that on their requirements for iTunes 11.3:

Now do you understand why I'M CONFUSED??

Are you downloading on a 64 bit machine? If you go to http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ the site will detect the architecture of the machine you are browsing from - 64-bit offers the 64-bit installer, 32-bit the 32-bit installer. I'm on a Win 7 32-bit machine - this is what I see:

This is the direct link to the installer you need (which you will also find in the page that tt2 referred you to):

The main iTunes download page will attempt to work out whether you're running 32-bit Windows or 64-bit Windows and offer the appropriate setup file. There is a support document (DL1615) that gets updated with the latest 64-bit installer, which is handy if you're running a 32-bit browser on a 64-bit system. There is no equivalent page for the 32-bit downloader, however there isn't usually a need to acquire the 32-bit setup file on a 64-bit machine. I don't believe Windows 2003 Server 32/64-bit or Windows XP 64-bit are supported platforms for iTunes which probably explains why you need some kind of workaround.

There are direct links in my user tip for the current 32-bit and 64-bit installers which I aim to update with each release of iTunes.

I'm still running 32-bit XP here and iTunes works just fine, but it is getting to be time to switch over to Windows 7 64-bit. I wouldn't give Windows 8 house room.

This is a VERY USEFUL suggestion!

Whenever I tried to connect with an x32 version of iTunes 3.11 from my 32x 2003 server, the Apple website offered me a 64bit version of iTunes. HONEST!

I was just able to successfully download a 32x version of iTunes 3.11 to an aging 32 bit HP Pavillion laptop I still use & maintain. I'll move it onto the server and try running the installer.

I'll post again with results after I do the installation on my server.

Thanks so much to hhgttg27 and turingtest2 for your time and consideration!

OK. I promised to post again and report after installing iTunes 3.11.

SUCCESS!

Here's my secret for installing & periodically upgrading iTunes on an unsupported 32x Windows 2003 (actually Windows Home Server v.1) server.

(1) Download and install the JTunes iTunes service manager for Windows by John Cleary:

http://www.johncleary.net/2009/11/download-itunes-windows-service/

(2) Then find out all about and find a source to download Orca.exe:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa370557%28v=vs.85%29.aspx

Use 7-Zip to unpack the iTunes installer. Then use Orca to remove the "launch Condition" requiring Windows XP SP2 from each of the sub-parts of iTunes you're planning to install. Then install the parts in alpha order. (iTunes last) Test installation. Then quit iTunes and use JTunes to run it as a service.

Running iTunes as a service takes a LOT of overhead off the Windows OS. It would probably help running on an XP installation pretty much the same way it does on my WHS v.1 installation.

(I don't know why Apple hasn't figured this out and recommended it long ago to people who run iTunes as a media server on their firewalled home networks.)

Thazzit guys! Goodby and thanks for the fish!!
