Kernel panics on 4,1 - machine check errors

I recently moved from a 1,1 Mac Pro running Logic 9 on Snow Leopard to a 4,1 Mac Pro and updated to Logic x on Mavericks. All seemed to go well but I've started getting kernel panics, always when Logic is running. The latest report is below. The machine (bought second hand) came with an NVIDIA Quadro 4000 card and I've added an ATI Radeon HD 5770 from my old machine (both Mac editions, not flashed) so I can run 3 monitors. I've tried unplugging all 3rd party USB devices.

The report below shows the "BSD process name corresponding to current thread" as Logic Pro X, but this can also show Safari or simply kernel process on other occasions. Can anyone make any suggestions as to what might be causing these?

Many thanks for any help!

I've taken out the NVIDIA Quadro 4000 and will run it for a while. As you say it will then be a case of removing RAM. I had a look when I was inside and one of the six RAM modules (all branded Kingston) is half the height of the others. With my previous Intel Mac Pro's the RAM had to be installed in matched pairs - don't know about the early 2009 4,1. Could this maybe be an issue?

Rember has actually, and surprised me, found bad/marginal RAM issues in Mac Pro models.

AHT though I would say is worthless, system profile: memory will show parity errors and some others.

Memtest - which Rember is just GUI wrapper for, is better or best and has the advantage of being able to run dozens of concurrent instances all in their own terminal window so you can test 256MB for 8 loops and run enough to test all but the core OS kernel.

Creating a CD from an ISO is even better. And Windows has memory test utility or memtest on its DVDs or installers - and that has found issues that Mac has missed - even AHT - including where the DIMMs were loose and not fully seated.

Cleaning contacts, reseating, and of course NOT mixing different types or batches of DIMMs - sounds like you have more than one and so they do tend to have different DNA in some manner if not in programming or DRAM such as number of rankings.

UPDATE: After running the system minus the NVIDIA Quadro 4000 for over 24 hours (so down to 2 monitors running off the ATI Radeon HD 5770) everything seems stable. To early to say it's fixed but Im wondering if the problem may lie with some incompatibility between the Quadro 4000 and the Radeon HD 5770?

There had been a few graphics glitches since I bought the MP and installed the second graphics card - e.g. things going missing from the desktop. Wonder if this was connected to the issue.

Aug 3, 2014 8:57 AM in response to stanoliver

The Mac pro 4,1 and 5,1 do not use Matched pairs. Slightly better performance is obtained by matched trios.

The fourth slot (on each side) is shared with the third slot. Installing a module there may very, very slightly slow down memory access. So when you populate that fourth slot, be sure the module you are installing there is genuinely helpful -- do not gratuitously install a 0.5 GB module there, for example.

Older and less sophisticated memory tests can be fooled into thinking everything is fine, because single-bit errors are corrected in Hardware. Background software attempts to log those corrections and store them in this pane of the System report:

Some say running the system and doing your regular work -- and using this display (which must be re-invoked to get new data) is at least as good as running memory tests.

I bought another Radeon 5770 (second hand ebay) to match the existing one, as removing the Nvidia Quadro seemed to have stopped the panics for a couple of days. Installed, but a few hours later another panic. Aarrrggggghhhhh!

I've removed the first pair of RAM sticks (2Gb each) from slots 3 and 7, including the 1/2 size one mentioned above (pic below). Waiting nervously!

Actually Grant, I've been reading your posts on another thread and I'm wondering if you could give me some more advice. Now I've ruled out the Nvidia Quadra as being the problem and the newly-bought second 5770 isn't working either, I'm going to try running all 3 monitors (all at 1920 x 1080) off the the 5770 in PCI slot 1.

I know I need active adaptors for the 2 mini display port outputs - would a couple of these be OK? - http://www.startech.com/AV/Displayport-Converters/Mini-DisplayPort-to-DVI-Active -Adapter~MDP2DVIS

Thanks so much for your help.

This issue is really complicated, and it gets mixed up with the slightly different rules for the late 2013 Mac Pro.

AMD says that to use more than two displays, you will need ACTIVE adapters.

To enable more than two displays, ... additional hardware ... may be required. Maximum two active adapters supported. Seewww.amd.com/eyefinityfaq for full details.

Apple says:

Note: The Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter (different from the Apple Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI adapter) is considered a single-link, passive DisplayPort device.

I do not think your display problems are causing machine checks. Machine checks are almost always caused by Memory (or Processor) problems.
