Screen goes black macbook pro + thunderbolt screen

It's been one day my screen turn black frequently, my macbook pro retina display still open but I cannot see anything.

Then I try to restart my computer and it seems to stay black until I try to plug it to an HDM tv, it's seem to restart the graphic card or resolution.

I don't really know

I have Yosemite beta (latest version), I just turned off automatic graphic. It seems to have fix the issue for now

I've read these treads previously, but I'm not really sure if it's because of that.

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6258985?tstart=0

The root cause was a faulty logic board (and not 10.9.3 upgrade). My MBP has been working without issue since the replacement. As I have read in other threads (on this site and others), if you are getting GPU Panic attacks, chances are very good you have a hardware issue.

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6273882?answerId=25911331022#25911331022

ask for: VST" (for "Video Switching Test"). Ask for it. A "Failed" result means that the fault is present. … Print the first page of the panic report and bring it with you.

Try moving these start up items:

com.paceap.kext.pacesupport.snowleopard 5.8

com.manycamllc.driver.ManyCamDriver 0.0.9

...to a new folder on your Desktop. I don't know where the "snowleopard" thing comes from but as you're having video I/O and NVIDIA problems, I would get rid of those two first, reboot and see if anything changes. If not, give a call back.

Good luck,

Clinton

This appears to be a thermal overload tripping on the logic board causing the system to black out and reboot (which is the usual result for ANY computer out there). Happened to me too, same model, and simply removing the bottom cover brought the computer back to life. (also moved it to the basement where it is significantly cooler). I did SMC and PRAM reset but that only fixed the problem for a few minutes. The base and top area (above the keyboard) were both scalding hot when this happened each and every time, and relocating the computer into a colder environment, combined with removing the baseplate, fixed everything immediately. I used gfxCardStatus to determine when exactly the problem occurred. More times than not it blacked out when switching from Intel to NVIDIA however sometimes it even failed at boot, which didn't make a whole lot of sense.

Generally speaking I have had all sorts of graphics/display issues with this computer even from the day I bought it. Should've exchanged it while I was under warranty but I didn't and didn't get AppleCare so I kinda screwed myself there. But I am at least glad my logic board isn't dead. Thermal issues are fixable, just trying to figure out how may be where the challenge begins.

For me all of these issues began when I cracked my display. Bought an entire new lid assembly, installed it, and all was well. However starting a day or so ago, I noticed it would black out and on occasion restart itself for no reason (I've only had the new display for a few days). I kept thinking that my new display was bad. It wasn't - since it works perfectly after a cold start for a good while then eventually quits. Connecting to an HDMI monitor seems to jiggle the problem a bit and brings it back to life. However upon a forced reboot, it never comes back. I was almost to the point of putting Mavericks back on (which I hate; Yosemite even in beta seems to run far more stable and reliable) until I read your post about that not fixing it. Just saved me hours of backing up and restoring data.

If you're covered under warranty at all, send it back. Not worth messing with yourself if Apple will fix it for free. I don't have that luxury anymore so I am left to my own devices to figure it out. If it means a new heatsink or new thermal paste, so be it. I almost would rather have the screen glitches back than having this complete loss of display. This is what I get for buying first-gen. But hey, at least I have a working computer now.

Aug 5, 2014 4:20 PM in response to CoreyX64

I wasn't on the warranty, they are repairing it right now because it's my mother board (logic board I guess) apparently!

I hope it will not overheat again like you said and just make it not work again, my macbook pro last for almost 2 years without this issue, I hope it was just the mother board itself and not an overheat problem :S

Thanks for all the information though.

Aug 5, 2014 4:32 PM in response to marc.benard

No problem. The last time I took my computer in for graphics issues they said that it was likely the logic board, however in running diags the logic board passed with flying colors, yet the problems persisted. I would be willing to bet that my logic board is bad too just better cooling seems to be alleviating the problem. Since these are first-gen devices experiencing the issues it doesn't surprise me in the least. Lesson learned.

Out of curiousity, how much are they dinging you for a new logic board, and where are you geographically? (sometimes region determines price). I would imagine it is very far from cheap.

If I feel daring in the next couple days, I'll reseat the heatsink/cooling assembly and even give it some fresh thermal paste and see if that resolves the problem. I have thermal paste on hand so I have $0 expense going into this, and if it fixes it for good, $0 going out. It's paid for, so all I need is to take the time to do it. I need my computer for some important things before it blacks out again, so that's why I'm not jumping on it this minute. I'll post back and let you know of my findings.

Valid point. In light of how much the first-gen retina MBP's cost, 625 isn't too bad. It's still expensive don't get me wrong, but if you think about it it could always be a lot worse. I opened mine back up, blew it out with an air compressor, and reseated the heatsink. Heat dissipation seems normal (the top still gets warm-hot, which is perfectly normal depending on what you're doing, especially more GPU/CPU-intensive tasks. So far I haven't had a single blackout since doing so. I hope to keep it that way. Now I'm afraid to run anything thermally-taxing on this for fear of it happening again. Also works fine on both NVIDIA and Intel graphics. Switches back and forth as normal without a hitch. I guess I should be good now to return to my normal usage habits.
