"Windows could not update the computer's boot configuration"

Hello,

I'm trying to install Windows 8.1 to my mid-2014 rMBP. I used the Bootcamp Assistant to create the bootable USB, but when trying to install Windows I got the error above, that "windows could not update the computer's boot configuration. Installation cannot proceed." I looked it up and some people said that the partition bootcamp creates doesn't work sometimes, so I formatted everything, and tried various things such as making my own partition in Disk Utilities, or just leaving a blank space and letting the Windows installer create a partition, but no matter what I do I get this error when installing.

What can I do?

Well I managed to fix it, I'll post it here so it might help somebody in the future.

I read some posts about Bootcamp Assistant causing issues and it turns out to be correct, you just have to do everything manually and don't touch bootcamp assistant at all. I created a bootable USB using a program called Rufus (only available on Windows afaik), and downloaded the bootcamp drivers and put them on the USB myself (http://supportdownload.apple.com/download.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Appl e_Software_Updates/Mac_OS_X/downloads/03…)

Then I went into Disk Utilities and created a 120GB partition for Windows, then deleted that partition. Essentially left me with a ~380GB partition for OS X, and ~120GB of empty space, not a partition or anything.

Then boot from the USB, select this "empty space" as the partition to install Windows during the windows setup, and everything should work fine.

Hello! I've been trying to install Windows 8.1 for a while but always stopped at this error. I'm not too knowledgeable on this stuff so I'm a bit confused on how to do what you said.

On the link you mentioned with the bootcamp drivers should I just paste them on a clean usb pen? I already have a bootable pen I used with windows on it (from the past install that failed due to this error) so should I not use this one anymore?

Thank you for your time!
