One sim works , one doesn't !
I have two sim cards - for different carriers , one works and one doesn't - but they both work in a another phone - is this a sim issue or could be a hardware fault in the phone ?

When I switched phones they gave me a new sim for TMobile on my old number - but the sim didn't work - I therefore (unwittingly) put in my back up sim from EE and obviously the phone has locked to this sim - but although I get bars up and I can see EE is the carrier, its still wont work - as I have only had it for three days , I will take it back and complain
You have fallen prey to the advertising gimmick as have a number of users who have come here with the very same problem you have. A reseller who is less than honest and uses terms that mislead the customer into thinking they are getting an unlocked iPhone, which they are not. Be wary of any terms such as "factory unlocked" and "sim free" as neither are the terms used by Apple to signify an iPhone that is unlocked. Apple simply says, unlocked. No other tens are valid.
How can I be 100% certain that an iPhone isn't being sold by a re-seller though ? I mean, some shops and outlets ( like TV shopping channels ) also sell iPhones ? Will they also lock do you suppose ?
You can't be 100% sure that these phones are unlocked. The answer is that if you want a phone, then you don't buy from these sources.
Remember that Carphonewarehouse is NOT a carrier in it's own right, but will sell you the phone either on a sim free basis or for use with a particular carrier.
The phone carriers available are EE (an amalgamation of Orange and T-Mobile for 4G), Orange, T-Moible, 02, Vodafone and 3, along with Virginmobile. If you know that you want to take out a contract with any of these carrier and are happy to do so, then just go along to one of their stores and buy your iPhone from there and if you have a contract, the chances are that you can buy the phone at a reduced rate on the contract. The phone will be locked to that company though, so you can't use it with another sim card. If you are happy with that, then you can go ahead and buy one from the carrier of your choice.
I have a contract with 02 and my iPhone is locked to 02 and I am happy with that and have had a contract with them ever since the first iPhone was launched in the UK. My phone is locked to 02, but I don't mind that.
If you want an unlocked iPhone, then you need to go and buy it directly from Apple and you can use any sim card in it.
Don't buy from CPW - they will sell you a sim free phone that will lock to the first carrier sim card as you have found to your cost and they are NOT a carrier either - they are re-sellers really and cannot unlock this phone for you.
If you put an EE sim card into your phone, then your phone is now locked to EE and you will have to get EE to unlock the phone for you. That is all you can do.
The only other thing that you can try, is taking the phone back to CPW for a full refund saying that you are not happy. If you have only had the phone for 3 days, then you should be able to return it for a full refund with no questions asked.
Then go and buy the phone again, but this time from Apple directly so that the phone really is unlocked.
Buyer beware. You will know better next time.
Thank you all for your replies , I have no interest in phones and all I wanted was the functionality of an iPhone when I was and about -because the nitty gritty of buying contracts and phones holds no interest for me, I didn't ask the right questions at all , to my detriment .Having dealt with CPW for years and years, I never suspected ( and they never told me) that there was a big difference between buying from Apple and buying from a re- seller , a term i had heard but not understood until, 2am this morning . I am a woman in my late 50's , I grew up at a time when if you bought something " electronic" the person or outlet selling it you it was honest and scrupulous in their deslings.
i did do an amount of research on the net but again, you almost have to know the answer to the question before you ask to get the correct phrasing to get the correct answer - and some people on here are courteous and helpful and some less so , some are quite gloating - not any of you I hasten to add ! Whilst my ignorance is no defence , if teachers were rude and bullying , no one would even bother trying to learn, no one would be able to learn and some threads have had me in tears . Some people on here can be very rude and condescending - it puts me off using an otherwise valuable resource .
i know more from this discussion than I was told my CPW - as all contracts have a cooling off period, the phone will be returned and complaints made regarding the way in which the contract and the phone , supposedly a de-chipped , no network purchase , was sold because I believe it's blatant mis- selling .
i have been guilty of naively - that's all - and have learned a lesson but I think it's one that I could have learned if CPW had been more transparent . Thanks again , I will update you later on .
UPDATE :
OK, the last laugh is officially on me - for all the people who had a pop at me and those that gave me lengthy advice , some of which was correct, some of which wasn't at all correct - here's some unexpected news ( even for me) following a long and fruitful conversation with Apple UK this morning and a CPW visit .
1. The phone that some people accused me of "hacking" using an unlock site, is officially unlocked with Apple and as its still under warranty , I can send it back and Apple will replace it for me , so maybe the unlock site isn't fraudulent at all - EE have unlocked the phone via the unlock site - its a hardware problem !
2. The second CPW phone has also been replaced with a completely unlocked phone by CPW so I can use any sim I want in it from now on - have tried this and it works , it hasn't locked to "the first sim " CPW can supply factory unlocked phones so that information is also flawed .
3. All Apple were bothered about was that the phone some people accused me of having "hacked" - was unlocked in their records and it was within warranty - which it was .They are sending me an envelope for me to get a replacement phone - so , job done !!
a) You don't need to buy a phone direct from Apple to get an unlocked phone if the carrier unlocks it - once unlocked , it stays unlocked .
b) A phone may lock to a sim of a specific carrier but it can be unlocked by the carrier - and then it should accept any sim and work .
c) Apple are not interested in where the phone comes from, if its "blacklisted" , if its new or secondhand , the warranty is all - even if its not originally in your name ! Barring water damage and obvious attempts to use a jailbreak on it , its covered by warranty , unlocked or not .
d) CPW can and will supply factory fresh, unlocked phones that don't lock to a sim !
In future , I will not rely on the forums here within the Community , the Apple rep told me this morning that its a poor substitute for just ringing them and letting them sort the problem and I agree - many people may mean well but they don't know as much as they think they know .
Thanks for you input though , but you do need to look at your answers so you don't give out incorrect information.
Have a great day - I know I will cause I now have the truth .

If I had relied on the rationale and advice given on this thread and the other one which for some reason was deleted , I would have binned the much scorned, ridiculed and much maligned so called "hacked" phone and now been several hundred pounds worse off - thank goodness , for me I have more sense than that .
My experience actually proves that several assumptions, statements and premises made by some of the posters were deeply flawed and surely contradicts the assumption that people gave the correct advice - people hate being wrong don't they ?
No one can know everything - better to contact Apple than the Community - I have proved it today .

I can't decide if you area troll or you are just not very intelligent, or maybe just intelligent enough to be dangerous.
You haven't proven anything other than if you withhold enough information you can mislead people.
Your post regarding unlocking your phone was deleted because you made it appear that you had gone to a 3rd party site and had your iPhone jailbroken in order to unlock it. It appears now, if you are even to be believed, that the shop you took it to used social engineering to process an unlock request around the carrier (they do this by paying employees who work for the carrier on the side) and then they restored your iPhone as a new iPhone and received the message "Congratulations, your iPhone is now unlocked". Had you processed it through the carrier you would have done this yourself and seen the message. This process "works" but there is one risk on your part. On occasion cell carriers will do an audit and they will discover that no official request was ever made to unlock your iPhone and they were never paid (if they charge for such things). At that point they will send this information to Apple and relock your iPhone. The other risk with a 3rd party is there is one notorious company that will take your money, do nothing then ask for a ridiculous amount of funds and threaten to blacklist your iPhone if you don't pay. It is best to go the official route.
As to Carphone Warehouse I would believe Peter long before I would ever believe you. If you do a search here there are many, many threads regarding buying a lower priced phone from them and having it lock to the first cell SIM you put in it. They have contracts with the various carriers and it is their business model. You complained and either Carphone Warehouse didn't want to mess with you and gave you an unlocked phone or you paid extra and you were given an unlocked iPhone. Again you gave misleading and vague information about how this went about. I also think you lied to the Apple person you spoke with about the information you were given here and I don't believe your description you provided as to what the Apple rep said.
So now that you have had your fun go away and troll elsewhere. And when your phone is out of warranty be sure to have your credit card available and pay Apple for help since it is doubtful anyone here will help you.
Is the iPhone unlocked?
That means the iPhone is locked to the carrier for the sim that works. Only that carrier can unlock the iPhone so the other sim will work.
Phone is unlocked so don't know why that can be ?
Apple have confirmed that the phone is unlocked
Yes its supposed to be unlocked - Apple have confirmed this today but Tmobile sim wont work
One sim works , one doesn't !
