Very fond of my Xerox 4800 scanner and would love to use it with my new Apple i mac 21.5 - but can I???

Check the Xerox website for v10.9 Mavericks compatible drivers.
If there are none available, you can use the pre installed scanning app Image Capture located in your Applications folder.
