esc Not Working in VIM

I haven't been using vim recently, and I encountered a problem when using it this morning on my ID on my MBP. The problem does not occur with other IDs or on my MP. I'm not sure what got changed, but <esc> no longer takes me out of insert mode in VIM/VI/MacVIM. I did discover that I can use ^<esc>, so I have "something" that works, but this is rather bothersome.

How can I find out what has changed that keyboard command?

Or is it possible to see what the <esc> is currently mapped to?

I don't have a .exrc or .vimrc file.

I have a clone of my system that I created ~6/19, within a week or two of when upgraded to Mavericks. That also did not have the problem.

I'd appreciate any insights into this issue

I found out what was causing the problem. I had turned on "Speakable Items", but I had not used it for a while so I had forgotten its default "listening" key is <esc>. I switched to a different listening key:

Apple ->

System Preferences ->

Accessibility ->

Speakable Items ->

Listening Key ->

Change Key

I am still curious as to whether there is a method of determining what is overriding a keystroke.
