Try this - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430

I dropped my iPad and lost just about everything. I was left with a black screen. A white vertical stripe kept moving onto the black screen from the left edge of my screen and after after 2 inches would repeat the same pattern, until it went black again and the cycle would restart. I could not shut the iPad down and try to reboot by using any method. After reading numerous posts I concluded the only way to fix this problem was to smack the iPad around. (I know, I know - its iPad abuse). This took a considerable amount of time and PATIENCE, trying different combinations of using the home and reboot buttons. I was about to give up a few times but after a short wait started the smacking/buttons process all over again. All I can say is somehow it worked, so if you have this problem keep smacking the rear of the iPad and different buttons until the Apple Logo appears on the screen. Once you see it you have reached the promised land!

(hint: for me, by pressing the reboot button only I was able to see some very faint text in the background of the black screen. Then a few good smacks with my hand brought the Apple logo to fruition.
