Q: "communication error" to my iMac

An Epson C88 series printer sends a "communication error" to my iMac and will not print anything. However, when I connect a Mac laptop via the same USB cable the printer does work. This started just after changing an ink cartridge in the Epson

Mac Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)
