Hi,

Messages will start up in two cases.

The first is as gumsie is explaining - if it is in System Preferences > User and Groups > you user account > Login Items

The other is when it is trying to Sync iMessages you may have made on your iPhone or that people have sent you whilst you were Off line on the Mac.

Go to Messages > Preferences > General Section.

There is an item that reads "When I Quit, set the Status to Off Line" this will stop the app be "woken" by the IMAgent app.

Basically the IMAgent app "listens" for Messages sent to any of the Messages service you might belong to and the FaceTime servers.

If your computer is ON but those app are not launched the IMAgent will cause this to happen.

Obviously when you turn the computer On for the day then there may be event s that will trigger the app to start.

Hi,

Could you clarify for other users whether it was System Preferences .... > Login Items that needed Messages removed or was it the setting in the Messages Preferences ?

This will help other readers of this thread.

Hi,

Apple places some items in the DOCK for your thinking you will be using these more than others.

Obviously the Finder is far left.

The Time Machine, Launch Pad and Mission control followed by the App store icon and Dashboard are the next in most people's Docks.

Mine then has Safari, Firefox, Mail, Messages, FaceTime and Contacts.

I then have iPhoto, Preview, iTunes, iBooks, Skitch (Third party app), GarageBand, iWeb, Dreamweaver, Calendar, Pages, Keynote and a few more before System Preferences and Disk Utility.

You can click on these and drag them about into the order you want.

be careful not to take to far above the Dock because if you let go here there is an Animated puff of smoke that denote you have removed the item from the DOCK.

In most cases there are several ways of doing the same thing.

If and App is in the DOCK you can click and Hold to see the menu and Select the Options and Open At Login

The same thing can be done by going to System Preferences > Users and Groups > your Account > Login Items and Pressing the + icon then navigating to the Applications Folder to add an App

Now there are other things that can cause an app to "relaunch" at Start up.

If you do not Shut down/Quit Apps then this alert comes into play

This Alert will restart any App that was Open on Shut down.

The thing that can complicate this is apps where pressing the Red Button does not Quit the App (it only hides the window clicked)

Hope that helps

Hi Ralph,

I checked the setting in Message Preferences that you suggested & found that "When I quit Messages, set my status to Offline" was actually checked & I could not change it, I then quit messages & hay ho messages did not appear on startup, I did not realise that if the message icon was in the dock it would activate on start up, when I right click the messages icon & click quit the icon disappears from the dock & does not activate on startup.

I think my iMac is going to be a bit of a challenge for me.
