What file format(s) does iPod classic accept?

I'm copying my LPs, using a USB turntable and recommended software. I've been saving the tracks to .AIFF format. Interestingly, when imported to iTunes, this format plays back on my MacBook Air and iPhone (5C), but not on my iPod classic. In fact, it renders the iPod inoperable (requiring reset). What file format (e.g. MP3, MP4, etc.) should I use?

iPod (5th generation)

From the Technical specifications;

Audio

  • Frequency response: 20Hz to 20,000Hz
  • Audio formats supported: AAC (8 to 320 Kbps), Protected AAC (from iTunes Store), HE-AAC, MP3 (8 to 320 Kbps), MP3 VBR, Audible (formats 2, 3, 4, Audible Enhanced Audio, AAX, and AAX+), Apple Lossless, AIFF, and WAV

However, if your iPod is having issues with AIFF format, perhaps your software isn't encoding the files correctly. MP3 is a universal format used by all players, so use that. Apple's preferred format is AAC, but not all non-Apple players can play AAC files. Do not use .wav unless you really need to, it creates very large files to which you cannot add artwork.
