Hi John, I have seen reviews saying that this monitor doesn't work correctly with MacBook pro but you seem to have a different view. Im looking to buy two of these monitors and connect them both to my mac book pro via USB 3. Do the monitors work perfectly with the mac and are they easy to set up? Also will the mac be able to power them both do you know?

Thank you

There are some pretty portable monitors compatible with USB 3 notebooks, unfortunately the offer is limited for mac users. One good option is GeChic, which manufactures portable displays with VGA and HDMI interface, wo all you need is a simple adaptor. Another option is the AOC E 1649 FWU 16 in display, which may be connected via USB 2. This could be another abandoned niche by Apple. This is what I need too, and have not decided what to purchase.

I have not tested any, though, but GeChic tech specs recommend it as most appropriate. AOC via USB 2 may be another good option, but am not sure whether the driver works OK with The Captain.

I have a Lenovo ThinkVision LT1421 - 14" LED Monitor - Portable monitor (USB connection only) and it works perfectly with both my Lenovo T440S laptop from work as well as my wife's MacBook Air with Yosemite.

However, I have just bought a MacBook Pro (with El Capitan) and it does not recognise the monitor. Apple should definitely sort this out, it is a shame that they pride themselves so much about plug & play and this does not work. Complete rubbish.

This is not only an issue for Apple, but for the manufacturer as well. As long as Apple does not have a constant co-operation with other companies, in our case companies, which manufacture USB displays, the results are bad. As an old macuser, I must admit that Apple has not had any major innovation over the last 5 years, bar—perhaps, am not sure—their watch, which does not tell me very much. Curiously enough, Apple has not invested in a genuine pro tablet with a pro OS. iPad Pro has a ‘pro’ just to be there as long as the OS is not fit, and was not planned, for a genuine pro tablet. Portable USB monitors have become more and more used, but this detail seems ignored by Apple. And I stop here. Read above my other considerations on USB displays. There are some, incidentally some of them compatible with OS X too, not that Apple wished that. Why? Do not ask me, I really do not know and am puzzled with this behaviour of Apple. Apple must come up with pretty innovations of other companies, it is a reversed situation against some 5 years ago, and all the other companies strove to come up with Apple.

After waiting for more than a year and hoping that DisplayLink technology will finally be working with OS X I am giving up and selling my AOC e1659Fwuto some Windows user.

There were times when it worked, there were times when it didn't. I don't care whether it's the drivers or OS X updates. It simply is not reliable enough. Even when it worked there is no brightness adjustment so I had to adjust everything according to the brightness of AOC.

I hope that Packed Pixels connected via Thunderbolt will be more reliable, though they are twice as expensive and smaller.
