No way to say for certain.

First, Second and Third Generation iPads could all run iOS 5.1. at one point or another.

If it does not have a camera, then its certainly a first Generation iPad. Otherwise it can be a second or third generation iPad.

Your best bet is to use the Model number to determine the generation.

Settings->General->About->Model

Currently, the iPad Air is a Fifth Generation iPad.

The S/N is shown on the lower rear of the iPad case or Settings>General>About>Serial Number.

That would be a first generation iPad. The current generation is fourth for the iPad, only.

See the chart below to determine whether you can upgrade your device and what you can upgrade to. If you do not have a Software Update option present on your iDevice, then you are trying to upgrade to iOS 5 or higher. You will have to connect your device to your computer and open iTunes in order to upgrade.
