Macbook Pro screen glitches, 3 beeps, NOT THE RAM

My Macbook pro has been having screen glitches randomly with lines appearing on the screen and then it suddenly shuts down. Sometimes It beeps 3 times (what everyone claims is a ram issue) and sometimes it does not beep and will just start right back up again. I'm currently using it right now and it seems to be okay but this is always the case. It works fine and then all the sudden it glitches and shuts down. I

I have had the Ram replaced TWICE and have had the ram readjusted in case it has fallen out of place. my computer has passed every hardware test imaginable. Sometimes when I scroll on safari, chrome or anywhere (when its working) the screen glitches and lags really bad. MY computer is literally unusable. I am in nursing school and my computer is vital PLEASE someone help me!!!!

Here is just some details and extra info about what I've tried and researched:

I am currently using it in "safe boot" mode and I turned the SMS (sudden motion sensor) off.

I have done so much research on this issue here is what I have found thus far, obviously the ram issue, A GPU issue, A logic board issue (lets pray its not), a battery issue or a issue with Mavericks. Could it be something I downloaded?

I have a MBP 15" early 2011, had the logic board replaced in the apple program for the video chip, after that, i started to get kernel errors once in a while, all was pointing to RAM, but never could actually find the defective stick tried many, after a while of seating and reseating the sticks and a fresh install os the macOs it stopped for almost a year with no problems i thought i was done; only to begin crashing, powering off and beeping this week.

and having exactly the same problem as this.

So I took it apart again, and what did i find... apparently, as i said, and for everyones happines it migh not be the soldering at all!!

It seem the CLIPS that hold the stick closest to the keyboard are worn and do not have enough pressure so they do not hold the ram in place all the time, a little bump and the stick spings up like half a milimeter and the problem appears.

What did i do? Got a 1.5mm (.60 cal) piece of flat styrene about 3mm wide and 7 or 8 mm tall, put BOTH RAM sticks in place and with a little plastic tip/spudger push down the stick closest to the keyboard so the clip can make its full travel inward and insert the styrene pieces one in each side in the slots between the clip and where the screws for the backet are and then push them towards the RAM contacts to make pressure inward so the clips are pressed firmly agasint the sticks (you wont be able to remove the sticks without removing this styrene pieces).

I did this, the MBP started with no problems, i can now shake it and won't freeze and/or beep at all.

I'll try to make a video or at least a photo guide showing and post the link (it will be my first YT video so be nice hahaha) so it shows the fault and fix clearly

The 2009 model use 1066mhz RAM, the 2012 uses 1600mhz, no way can one switch them without performance being affected, they are different.

You are wrong on the 2012 upper RAM limit as well, so that's wrong on everything.

Nope, checked again. 2009 and 2012 MacBook Pros seem to take different RAM.

DDR3-1066 SODIMM for the 2009 and DDR3L-1066 SODIMM for the 2012.

They are different and could, I guess, cause problems if used in the wrong Mac.

In other words, if you put the wrong RAM in one and it DOES work, you still probably shouldn't.

I am actually under the impression that DDRL is required for the 2012, though, even though it is not listed as such. In any case, if you go to crucial and dial up the 2012, they only list DDRL as an option. Personally I'd only ever use those in this machine.

In an MBP DDR3 and DDR3L may be used interchangeably, this has been the way since DDR3L came into existence. DDR3L offers a few operational advantages though, less heat and lower power consumption are the main ones.

Settle down people! Surely the point of this thread was the problem many of us were having with Macbook RAM issues, not arguing about who is the greatest Mac guru! The single RAM stick solution suggested here has worked for me so far so I'm glad I came across this discussion.

Thanks so much, igbee. I've been struggling with this issue for quite some time with the exact same model. It would intermittently panic and display the screen issues as others reported and it would reboot all by itself. It was guaranteed to happen if I moved/shaked it and would also occasionally happen when I was just typing on it. Every now and then I would hear the beeps as well, but not always. Another issue that I've not seen reported here is that the 'y', 'u', 'i' and 'o' keys would sometimes not work.

So lo and behold, I removed the 4GB module closest to the board, and the issues disappeared. Fingers crossed. I only have half the memory now, but I will try to find a 8GB chip, as you suggested.

I have this problem also but only if I add 2 ram 8gb Kingston , it says 1600 but my Mac show me that is 1333. If I use the original ram the Mac works fine. If I only work with a memory in nearest keyboard slot the Mac do not start and beep 3 times, no matter what 8gb ram install. but if I install 2gb ram in this module it works fine. If I instal a 8gb 1600 elpida it works too.

Thanks for posting igbee. This solved the issue I was having as well. I had 2 4GB memory cards and removed the top card (closest to the keyboard). My laptop is working normally now. Before that, just as everyone else, the screen randomly distorted, and shut down. Occasionally I would get the 3 beeps. I could cause the distortions and shut downs by bumping the ram with my fingers. The top slot had to be going bad. Quick fix for $0 and no time spent leaving it to be repaired. At some point I may want to have it fixed but for now I'm happy with how it is operating.

Hello, I've read through all of your comments and they are promising! Just wondering if you have had any issues since only using one RAM stick of 8GB in the top slot? If everything is still looking good, is this the type you were talking about for a Macbook Pro 13' 2012 for $64.99

Before I realized this machine was only going to allow me to use one slot, I bought a 16GB kit from Crucial.

The kit was two 8GB DDR3L - 1600 SODIMM 1.35VCL11 modules. The CT number was: CT2K8G3S160BM.

The 8GB DIMM has been working fine for several months. Performance seems fine. Slowdowns on this machine recently are all tied to the changes in iCloud services. (What a train wreck Apple has made of that.)

(And, yes - I have a post in this thread way up there - I'd convinced myself that it was a mechanical problem - but the fix I posted only lasted a few weeks, then it began to recur.)

Thanks everybody for your input. I was having the same problems with my mid-2012 13" MacBook Pro (purchased new in 2015) after about two years of use: computer would freeze, screen would start to glitch, then shut down, and beep three times repeatedly. I did lots of research and got lots of advice. Eventually, I performed the fix suggested in this discussion. Turned out to be a faulty RAM slot (the one closest to keyboard.) Originally I had 4 Gig RAM cards in each slot. I removed the RAM card closest to keyboard, and replaced the other RAM slot with a 8 Gig RAM card. Computer ok now.

I've been running my Macbook with a single 8GB Samsung DDR3 1600 module for a couple of months now with no issues at all. I was at the point of buying a new computer before coming across the single module fix.

On the end note, I did do a check on the System Information > Memory and when it glitches, it freezes everything, but the RAM doesn't display the Serial information ever, however, it does state that both are okay before, during and after the error everyone else gets. (I have the Macbook Pro 8, 1 - 13" Early 2011 Model and upgraded the RAM a few days ago when this started. I used Crucial to make sure I had the right type use able for my MB.)

Just a couple of months ago I started to have the same problem, with all the information on the forum, I'm going to take the computer to a specialist ( I"m currently not on the US) and hopefully, it will work! Thank everyone, I will update if any changes or solutions.
