What does the little green light on the back of my brand new Airport Extreme mean? Specifically, each of the three ethernet ports have a little green light that sometimes lights up (but not always) when one plugs an ethernet cable into them.

I should have been more specific, apologies; we have a 802.11ac. And we're curious about the lights on the back of the Extreme just next to each of the Ethernet ports, not the light on the front.

Ethernet connectivity.. when you have ethernet plugged in and active.. the ethernet light turns on. It doesn't mean much.. except that ethernet does recognise there is a connection.
So does this mean that if I just plug a cable into the Extreme, but there is no device on the other end of the cable, or there is a device but it is turned off, the light will not turn green???

Correct..
but some devices like computers in sleep actually have ethernet turned on.
Anyhow play and see .. you learn much by trying it out yourself.
