Q: My MacBook Pro is running really slow.

Hey. My MBP has been running very slow for some time, and its becoming very frustrating. Straight after I start it up it starts running slow...I have 'Memory Clean' (not sure whether this is helpful or not) and as soon as i my Macbook loads it tells me i have less than 25MB of RAM available, so i have to use the clean memory function, yet this doesn't really seem to release much RAM.

Here is my EtreCheck report:

You have installed several troublemakers. First uninstall Avast. I can't think of any commercial AV products that won't degrade perforamcen. The only real current threat to your Mac is adware and most AV programs won;t pick those up anyway.

Unistall the Trusteer software. In spite of legitimate efforts by its developer to make it mac-Friendsly , it continues to cause probelms, especially with Safari. Uninstall instructions here:

    http://www.trusteer.com/support/uninstalling-rapport-mac-os-x

In Safari, diable extensions for now.

Cleaning Apps are useless. The Mac OS takes care of just about anything a cleaning app claims to do.

After doing what I've suggested, please test and report back so we can see if some of the other third-party stuff you have is still affecting performance. You ave some with which I am not familiar.

Memory Clean is no longer useful with Mavericks new Memory Management System which attempts to keep RAM as full as possible to avoid having to access your drive. It just causes your Mac to use more energy and load things more slowly. Free RAM is wasted RAM. Open Activity Monitor (found in /Applications/Utilities/) select the Memory Tab and keep an eye on the MEMORY PRESSURE graph at the bottom. Check OS X Mavericks: About Activity Monitor for information.

Yes PistolPete, this time I get in:

Alan and Mad have said it all, although I think Mad was too nice for MemoryClean, it is crap.

The only Safari plugin that may come back is the 1password plugin.

You have accidentally installed FKCodec and Spigot adware.  See Remove unwanted adware that displays pop-up ads and graphics on your Mac.

For faster, more efficient identification and optional removal of all currently know adware, run AdwareMedic, available free from this Forum’s Malware Guru, owner of TheSafeMac blog and a colleague of mine.

To understand why this happened and how to avoid it in the future see John Galt’s How to install adware.

If you are still having issues, please start a new discussion and completely explain what you mean by "running slow" in much more detail. There may not be anybody else monitoring this and you'll get much more attention than posting to this old thread. That's just the way this forum works.
