I'm working on CS4. My computer is functioning.. but illustrator has totally frozen. Is there anyway of getting back going again without me having to shut down my entire computer and risk loosing the artwork?

you're in the wrong place. This is the Apple forum for users of final cut pro studio. And Illustrator is an Adobe product. I'd suggest going to their website and doing some googling. I don't think Illustrator has any sort of "autosave function" however many programs store files as they are being worked on in a "temp" file. These are usually hidden away.
Illustrator has frozen with an unsaved piece of work.
