at itunes screen in setup can't move forward with setup

I just purchased an ipad, from my nephew and I am trying to set it up. When I get to the screen itunes it says entee apple id for store purchases etc. So I enter my apple id and password and I get the message could not sign in and I cannot move forward with setup.
