Hard drive constantly being searched

Ever since I updated to Mavericks my Hard Disk constantly searches. I have tried turning off Spot Light Indexing and Time Machine. I have even reformatted the HD and reinstalled the OS and then re-installed all my files and apps. By the way I could not find a good posting on how to easily do that, took me 2 days and hours on the phone with Mac support. When I look at the Activity Monitor it shows the Kernel is constantly accessing the Hard Drive. Is there anyway to go back to Mountain Lion?

No re-indexing instruction at the link you posted. I did find it here Spotlight: How to re-index folders or volumes

Re-indexed spotlight, no change.

Killed mdworker, no change. But I have done all this and more before. Kernel still reading 8.14 MB/sec and writing 200KB/sec.

Thank you Eric for that link, it looks pretty simple. I hope it works. I can't remember if I reformatted my Time Machine drive before of after the Mavericks update.

Personal I think think Home Land Security paid Apple to put code in the Maverick kernel to find terrorists, secrete documents and Illegal photos. We can all thank the Patriot Act for keeping us safe, Thank You Big Brother.

In response to my last post; unloading Spotlight does stop the continual drive searching. Something still searches the drive for about 30 minutes after I first turn it on, and then there is only normal activity after that (A partial fix). I hope Apple fixes this problem in the next OS version. Searching for files is greatly increased with spotlight running, but it is slowing down my computer with its constant indexing. If I find out what the other culprit is I will leave another post.

Thank you Carolyn and Eric for your help.

Sure, Boot into Recovery, Erase the drive, then reinstall from your Backup you made prior to upgrading.

Or, Boot into Internet Recovery, Partition the hard drive (thus erasing it), then choose Reinstall OS X to put the original shipping OS back on the Mac. Then, Upgrade as necessary to Mountain Lion.

I hope Apple fixes this problem in the next OS version.

Not likely as it is something you have installed that is incompatible with Mavericks or you have some drive corruption which is preventing Spotlight from completing its initial scan.

Open up Activity Monitor and see what else besides kernel task is using up CPU or Memory.

You can dump the output of EtreCheck, but it will just be a guessing game as to what is incompatible without knowing the results of watching Activity Monitor.

These sometimes cause problems.

Un-install using the developer’s instructions to make sure you remove all parts of the application. Some people recommend not installing an application unless you know how to remove it.

Aug 11, 2014 3:09 PM in response to 2-fry

As Eric stated, those two things have caused problems, but I don't suppose they would cause the problems you are seeing.

If Spotlight continuously indexes, something is wrong with the drive or with the index.

If it is the index, re-indexing as has already been mentioned usually fixes the problem.

To find if it is having problems, open Console and look at All Messages. Type "mdworker" or "mds" into the search field and look to see if there are any failures noted. They will usually have a file name associated with them. If there are messages, see if you can open and save the files that it is stumbling on.

OK, from the logs it looks like Spotlight is the culprit. I am going to disable it by entering the following at the command line.

sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist

I will let you know if it works

Ok, this is not the solution. Turns out this disables the Find function and I use that...

I had to do the following at the command line to undo it:

sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist

I uninstalled the Logitech Mouse software.

I will let you know.

Well I removed GarageBand, booted in safe mode and repaired the disk permissions. The amount of data being written and read by the kernel has dropped to near zero, but the drive heads are still continually moving. This even happens in safe mode. I thinking the hard drive is failing or has a some kind of hardware error. I am going to have Apple replace it while I am on vacation. I want to thank everyone for their efforts.

Last question; Is there a link that walks you though the process of making an image of the hard disk to a USB drive so you can easily restore ones personal data and settings to a newly installed hard disk?

Hard drive constantly being searched
