Hidden Files Showing and Login Items

I just installed almost all of my apps on a new Mac Pro.

However, for some reason, after installing a few applications, all of a sudden I'm seeing all of the hidden files in my Finder. For instance, my Home folder now shows files like .bash_history, .CFUserTextEncoding, .DS_Store and .Trash --

I looked through preferences and through the Discussion boards. Can anyone tell me how to stop this from happening?

Also, I'm not sure if this is related, but everytime open Safari and sometimes FontExplorer X, it asks for a login, which never happened before.

I appreciate any help. Thank you in advance.

I think I answered my own question. I went into Terminal and did the following:

defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE

killall Finder

Hi Ned,

I solved the hidden files problem.

However, do you have any recommendations for the login issue? Every time I restart, Safari and Entourage keep asking for a Login password, which happens to be from my old G4. I'm wondering if I should archive my old Login items and start afresh? Or is that not recommended?

click on the blue apple top left of your screen, click "sys. pref"... then click on "accounts".... then click on
"login items"... that should be blank, no items listed... if they are... delete them. sometimes items sneak in there during downloads from websites. sometimes items that are listed in there can slow up or stall your comp. during start-up. good luck

Asking for a password in applications like Safari is indicative of one of two things…

1) Your login password is different to your keychain password

2) You have keychain problems

My guess would be option 2 so open the Keychain utility and run Keychain First Aid and see if you have errors.

Ned,

That did the trick. I changed both the Keyword Access password by going to Edit > Change Password for Keychain "login" (this time I made it something much harder to break as well). And then I went into Preferences > Accounts > Password > Change Password and changed the password to the exact same (harder) password.
