DVD freezes in one spot during playback

Question : Has anybody run into this problem no matter what type of media is being used ?

I have an 1hr:45min instructional DVD I am trying to put out. I have tried burning using both verbatim and memorex DVD+R double layer DVDs with the same result.....ie at approx 40 minutes in...the playback freezes for about a second or two, then contuniues playing.... playback is on a panasonic tv with a built in DVD player, and a Toshiba stand alone ( consumer)

I have both used "burn from disc image" and used the verify option and everything was "sucessful" according to the computer. I even checked though the disc image and everything was correct.

Yet when I play it on my portable, there's no freeze. I am baffled and very frustrated. I also tried to have the DVD duplicated and the duplication facility said there were errors in the 1st layer.

Does anybody have any suggestions or similiar problems? I read in one earier post to have the DVD drive in the computer replaced. Should I do that or should I try a 3rd party burner be better, and if so...which one?

Any help, comments, suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

-Jim

Hi s

Main advice about this is:

USE Verbatim DVD-R (Yes minus R)

Hope this applyes to You.

Thank you for the advice Bengt.

I will try to find those discs locally, if not I will order them online and
let you know if it works.

Just out of curiousity, I have noticed a lot of people have had similiar problems..ie dvd freezes, errors etc....has Apple bothered to inform customers
about this and if so, what have they done (or not done) to resolve the issue?

Thanks

Hey Jim,

I have had the same thing happen to me on my dvd player at home. My dvd works fine on my computer but freezes when I try to play it at home. I was told it may be that my dvd player is too old, which it may very well be, and to try it on a newer dvd player. It was also suggested to me that I make a disc image of it and slow the burning speed down. I still need to try this.

Hope this might help.

Kris.

Hi Krisa,

I did try burning from the disc image. I had the freeze in the same exact spot. I only have the Apple Super Drive and when I checked the "burn speed", it was grey so I couldnt have changed it. Maybe it goes to a default speed when your burning doublel layer. In the meantime, I have on order the Verbatim DVD-R dual layer discs as suggested and when I get them, I will let everyone know how things turn out.

My home and portable DVD players are no more than 2 years old so I have no idea why it would freeze on both my home players, and not on my portable. I did read however from another post that portables are better suited to "read through" errors better than a home machine. I am assuming maybe because they have some anti-skip or read ahead type software like some discmans and other CD players.

I will keep everyone posted as my saga continues to devolope.

Thanks

Hi Bengt,

Here's the saga so far. I burned another disc using the "burn from disc image",

I was using a DVD+dual layer ( I had not received the minus yet as you recommended) It burned it, verified with no errors, and I sent it out for duplication. The manufactuer was able to run duplication this time, but it still freezes for a 1/2 second in the same exact location as it did previously. I finally did get some of the DVD- double layer discs in which I am going to try and see if that makes a difference. I had to order the from Meritline because nobody in my area carries them.........just a FYI...Meritline has descent prices.......but their shipping was a lot more expensive that it should have been.

I will keep everyone posted

<but it still freezes for a 1/2 second in the same exact location as it did previously>

where is that 1/2 a second? is it during playback of the movie?? or while surfing the menus?

if it is during playback of the movie, I have read in other thread, something about not having any chapters within the first 2sec of the movie and the last 2 as well....

just a wild guess...

and yet comes the question, "why would the original not have any errors?" Maybe the original "flew" under the radar!!!!
