Does Pages work for the Turabian Style?

I am currently trying to write a Term Paper, fortunately not due til Thanksgiving, using Kate Turabian's "A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations" (6th ed.).

Unfortunately for me, Pages seems ill-equipped to the task of writing a term paper. However, before I am forced to buy Word, or use one of my school's PC labs, I'm hoping you all can help me.

1: Is it possible to hide a Page Count in a footer on some pages and have it displayed on others? I cannot have the title page show a page count, but all other pages must have one.

2: Is it possible to change the format of the Page Count, to go from Roman Numerals to Arabic Numbers?

3: Is it possible to move a page count from a header to a footer in the middle of a document? Turabian clearly states that at the start of new chapters or sections, the page count moves from the upper outside corner to the bottom middle of the page.

Thank you for any assistance provided.

The first page of new sections are missing their page number.

You can set whether the first page of a new section does or does not have a page number. This is set seperately for each section.

Page numbers in headers and footers do not stop with a new section.

You can modify the header and footer for each section separately, including whether a page number appears in the section and if its numbering follows the previous section or not.

I cannot have, on the first page of a chapter, the page number in the middle of the footer and then on subsuqent pages, have it on the right side in the header.

If you specify that the first page of the section is different, you can set the location of the page number for the first page separate from those of the remaining pages in the section.

Welcome to the discussion boards, GreyWolfActual.

All of what you want can be done in the Section tab of the Layout Inspector palette. When you need to change the formatting of the page numbering, simply insert a new section into the document, and format the page how you like.

Specifically:

- To make a title page format differently than other pages in the same section, simply check "First page is different" in the Section palette for that section.

- To change the format of a page count, Control-Click on the number, and use the contextual menu to choose the format style (an admittedly obscure way to do this)

- To move the page count, simply insert a new section, and put the page count wherever you like.

(Do note that to insert sections, or to alter the Section Palette settings, the cursor needs to be in the body of the document, and not in the header or footer.)

The way that Pages deals with page numbers and page counts, using document sections, is actually very much like Word. You can find all this information in the Help menu and the application documentation.

I have checked there, in fact I have already used it, several times. However, the problems with it are many.

-The first page of new sections are missing their page number. This is good for the title page, but terrible for any subsuquent first pages of new sections.

-Page numbers in headers and footers do not stop with a new section. In other words, a page number in a header or footer is in the entire paper, regardless of whether or not there is a section break.

-Furthermore, page numbers cannot be moved around at will from headers and footers. I cannot have, on the first page of a chapter, the page number in the middle of the footer and then on subsuqent pages, have it on the right side in the header. Its all or nothing.

Thank you though for the suggestion.
