Q: How to avoid iPhoto 8 hanging on upgrade to v9?

iMac 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 6 GB RAM. Was on iPhoto v8.1.2. Attempted upgrade to v9.5.1.

Upgrade from iPhoto v8.x to v9.x failed. It got stuck (Hanging) on “Upgrading iPhoto Database” or some such wording. Once iPhoto v9 was installed it insisted on upgrading the database before rebuild, so rebuild by iPhoto wasn’t an option at that point. Even attempts to rebuild with the 3rd party app “iPhoto Library Manager” resulted in it hanging. However, iPhoto Library Manager showed the name of the photo where it was hanging. By manually searching I found the hang always coincided where PICT, .pct photos or “.avi” movies were so I removed all the offending files I could find (Used Finder's search function on the open iPhoto library in Finder window). With iPhoto Library Manager rebuilding the database, the upgrade finally completed but now I find that the iPhoto shows many (most?) pictures with the wrong orientation (portrait photos are lying in landscape orientation) so I fear the photos have reverted to their originals and my laborious changes have been lost. The next thing I noticed is that the faces function recognises no faces, so the thousands of confirmed faces have all disappeared.

Question: Is this iPhoto library rebuilt with “iPhoto Library Manager” easily salvageable, or should I instead revert to the backup, remove the .avi movies and other offending files and retry the upgrade? There are now 18k+ photos in the database but I don’t know if this number includes originals that should have since been changed.

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)

Restore from the back up and the then export the offending files before trashing them. After upgrading you may be able to re-add them to the Library.

The current library is corrupted because you removed items via the Finder.
