Q: Numbering of film rolls in iPhoto

When you rename a film roll in iPhoto., the original roll number disappears.  How can I retrieve the roll number?

(In the Desktop & Screensaver pref. pane, the sidebar only shows roll numbers.)  I'm using iPhoto. 5.0.4, and Desktop & Screen Saver v.3.0.1

I don't believe there is a way.  Unless you remember what the roll number was you're out of luck.

As an aside, you're the first to post here in a very long time running iPhoto 5.  It's so old I can't even launch it to test for a solution.

I am intrigued by your comment that iPhoto 5.0.4 is "old".  Yet Software Update offers no alternatives. I am missing some understanding here, can you enlighten me?

iPhoto 5.0.4 has been released more than 9 years ago, Jul 26, 2005, see http://support.apple.com/kb/DL453

The current version is iPhoto '11, version 9.5.1,

There are no software updates from iPhoto 5.0.4, since it is the last iPhoto 5.0.x version for Panther and Tiger. That is why you do not see any updates in Software update. To get more current iPhoto versions, you need to buy paid upgrades.  What is your MacOS X version? That will determine, which iPhoto version you can upgrade to.

Is your Mac still a PowerPC?

My Mac is an Intel Mac running Snow Leopard.  Yet Software Update says there are no upgrades from iPhoto 5.0.4.

Why should I have to pay for an Upgrade?  I don't understand what is going on here.

UpDATES within the same version number, i.e. from version 5.0.3 to 5.0.4, are free.  UpGRADES, from Version 5 to 6 or higher, require purchases. It's always been that way.

If you Mac will support Mavericks, OS X Mavericks: System Requirements, you can upgrade your system for free but will have to purchase iPhoto and other iApps to run on Mavericks.

Software update will only show the free updates within the same version number and not the paid upgrades. Since you are running Snow Leopard, you could upgrade to iPhoto '11 and other iLife '11 applications, but that would require to buy the boxed retail version from Amazon or eBay. Upgrading to Mavericks, as Old Toad outlined, would enable you to buy the currently sold versions from the AppStore.

The advantage of the newer iPhoto versions with Mavericks: You could use iCloud, Faces and Places, and buy print products from Apple's print products store. Plus many bug fixes.
