Under some recent Mac OS, wasn't there supposed to be file-versioning feature (such as "file.doc;2", etc.) ?

I seem to recall reading, that, under some recent Mac OS, there was supposed to be file-versioning feature (such as "file.doc;1", "file.doc;2", etc.), but I can't seem to notice it under Mavericks v10.9.4 . Did I mis-read this ?

(Then, again, I skipped-over Mountain Lion, having moved from Lion v10.7.5 to Mavericks v10.9.3 (and then to Mavericks 10.9.4 ) ) .

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.4), ;6GB RAM; iPod Nano(5th gen.)
