Jan 29, 2015 10:29 AM in response to tgsommerby D. Hoffmann,★HelpfulI have a project currently, where I need to use the MPEG Streamclip application. While, what QuickTimeKirk says is probably true, MPEG Streamclip needs to have the MPEG 2 component installed. Therefore, I just installed it on Yosemite by hand. It requires that you have admin access and aren’t afraid to use the command line.
This is what I did:
1. Mount the disk image that QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback comes on.
2. Right-click the installer package and select “Open.” Double-clicking doesn’t work, because this predates Apple’s requirements for code-signing, which was introduced in Lion.
3. In the warning dialog, click on the “Open” button.
4. The installer comes up and presents a license agreement. Go to File->Show Files.
5. Note the location of what is supposed to be installed: /System/Library/QuickTime/ .
6. In the Finder, chose Go->Go to Folder… .
7. In the dialog, enter “/System/Library/QuickTime/” . This opens the target folder.
8. Now locate the MPEG 2 component in the installer package by first right-clicking on the package and selecting “Show Package Contents” .
9. In the folder that comes up navigate to the Contents folder.
10. Double click Contents/Archive.pax.gz, which will put the uncompressed files in your Downloads folder at ~/Downloads/System/Library/QuickTime/ .
11. Open ~/Downloads/System/Library/QuickTime/ and locate QuickTimeMPEG2.component.
12. Drag it to /System/Library/QuickTime/ to copy it to the the final location. Your administrative credentials may be needed.
13. Now, change the owner and group of it to what it needs to be in Terminal, which you need to open.
14. Type “cd /System/Library/QuickTime/” to make all commands operate in the target directory.
15. Type “sudo chown -R root:wheel QuickTimeMPEG2.component/” to change the ownership to what it needs to be. The sudo command requires your administrative password.
Done.
MPEG Streamclip did not complain about a missing MPEG 2 codec after this.

Mar 6, 2015 9:29 PM in response to D. Hoffmannby soddeyum,THANK YOU, HOFFMAN! Seconded, you are a life saver. I was bursting with frustration when your instructions came to the rescue. Eternally grateful videographer here. Makes me wish I could just whiz through terminal like that all by myself.

Mar 6, 2015 9:32 PM in response to QuickTimeKirkby soddeyum,And by the way, QuickTimeKirk, least helpful comment ever. No one reads that fine print. Blaming the user for a developer retail problem just makes an already frustrated person's day worse....

Apr 19, 2015 1:40 PM in response to D. Hoffmannby GirlAwakened,OMG! this worked. thank you. I followed until #12 as well. I wasn't sure what to make of 13-15. It seems to be working anyway. I am currently converting one of my DVD's to mpeg now. Do I know to worry about the Terminal and renaming and so forth?
Thanks!
