This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

Aug 10, 2014 5:45 AM in response to Linc Davisby ricochet17,I performed a safe reboot - same problem. I also attempted a SMC and PRAM reset. Same problem. There is very little on this machine (relatively new) and it worked right up until the 10.9.4 update. I also installed all firmware updates that are listed for this computer. Thanks!

(Over time, Apple has changed the built-in camera's name on newer Macs from "iSight" to "FaceTime" and then to "FaceTime HD." Regardless of the name of your Mac's built-in camera, the same info and troubleshooting applies.)

1. the issue is not application specific - no application can detect the camera
2. the issue is not user specific
3. the OS does not detect the camera
4. resets have no effect
I notice that when Apple updated to 10.8.5 they had a similar problem, and then released another update to correct it - could this be the case here?

Aug 10, 2014 8:58 AM in response to ricochet17by Linc Davis,If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data, then reinstall the OS.* You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need the backup unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.
If you use FileVault 2, then before running the Installer you must launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the FileVault startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) It will be nested below another icon with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar and enter your login password when prompted. Then quit Disk Utility to be returned to the main Recovery screen.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode. All other data will be preserved.
*The linked support article refers to OS X 10.9 ("Mavericks"), but the procedure is the same for OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later.

Anything's possible, but 10.9.4 works fine on my Macs.
If you have removed third-party software that may be causing your trouble, and if restarting Mac and applying the OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 Update (Combo) doesn't fix your problem, you likely have a hardware problem.
Properly applying the Combo version of the latest update (even if you are already running the same update version) can sometimes correct software problem. However, if your trouble is caused by a hardware problem, there are no user serviceable parts of the camera. Unless you have a current backup of your startup disk, make one now. Then use the final "Troubleshooting" suggestion: "... contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service."
