Time Machine: Using a storage attached to a dlink router

Hello,

I have a DIR-868L router and a Seagate 2Tb drive attached to it, and the storage is accessible in my MacBook Pro via SharePort Plus.

I created a sparsebundle via hdiutil (of course 123456789012 is not a macaddress 🙂):

sudo hdiutil create -size 400g -type SPARSEBUNDLE -nospotlight -volname "Backup of MyMac" -fs "Case-sensitive Journaled HFS+" -verbose ~/Desktop/MyMac_123456789012.sparsebundle

and then:

defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1

cd /Volumes/Seagate_Desktop_DR3A2

mv ~/Desktop/MyMac_123456789012.sparsebundle .

$ ls -l

total 160

drwx------@ 1 zigzag staff 16384 Aug 10 10:33 mymac_123456789012.sparsebundle

When I start TimeMachine, it still doesn't show the sparsebundle (all it sees is a memory card attached to my laptop and "Other Time Capsule"). This post is not related to accessing a SMB storage, just a disk connected to a router.

Thoughts?

Thanks

That device is unsuitable for use with Time Machine. I know this isn't the answer you want.

Apple has published a specification for network devices that work with Time Machine. None of the third-party NAS vendors, as far as I know, meets that specification. They all use the incomplete, obsolete Netatalk implementation of Apple Filing Protocol.

If you want network backup, use as the destination either an Apple Time Capsule or an external storage device connected to another Mac or to an 802.11ac AirPort base station. Only the 802.11ac base stations support Time Machine, not any older model.

Otherwise, don't use Time Machine at all. There are other ways to back up, though none of them is anywhere near as efficient or as well integrated with OS X. I don't have a specific recommendation.
