My iPad Air smart cover is causing my screen to turn off when I flip it so that it lies across the back of my iPad

I just purchased an iPad Air about a week and a half ago along with a smart cover. I have noticed that when I flip the iPad air smart cover from the front (ie. covering the screen) to lying across the back of the iPad that it causes the screen to shut off (as you would expect it to do on the screen, not on the rear of the iPad). Sometimes when the iPad is sitting on my lap the screen also decides to turn off while browsing a page (possibly moving the magnet on the rear of the iPad???).

Is this a normal behaviour/ something that I should expect out of the iPad Air smart cover? A friend of mine has stated that this does not happen to his.

I have spoken to apple support tonight, and they informed me that anytime the magnets on the smart cover come in contact with the front or the back of the iPad it will cause the screen to turn off and therefore this was perfectly normal behaviour.

Has anyone else experienced this problem?

UPDATE: I took my iPad Air to the Apple Store and after messing around with the iPad the Genius came to the conclusion that the magnet inside my iPad was defective. They replaced my iPad on the spot. Thanks for your input everyone!

If an Apple Rep told you that that is ridiculous. The screen should only shut off when you cover the screen - not when you flip the Smart Cover to the back - that would be very user unfriendly. As a temp fix you can turn off this behavior completely by:

Settings > General > Lock/Unlock.

I Think the cover is probably defective and not polarized properly maybe you could exchange it and see if a different one is any better, I have an iPad Air and a pink Smart Cover and that never happens but I had a nexus 7 and and a case I got on Amazon that had the auto wake/sleep feature and it always shut the screen off when flipped around, so I got a different case with the auto wake/sleep feature and it was totally fine and only shut the screen off when closed on the front of the device.

I have an old iPad 2 which is thicker than the Air. My guess is the magnets in the Smart Cover are too strong for the thin Air whereas it would work correctly with my iPad 2. As almost all products these days manufactured overseas have more than one source my guess is some manufacturing lots used magnets that were over spec strength wise.

I have the same problem - I had the glass in my ipad air replaced, and now my smart cover turns the ipad from the back !!

Its very annoying, I guess the lesson here is that I should have got it repaired by apple and not a local shop.😠

(Mind you, local shop charged me £70, and Apple appears to charge £250 which is frankly outrageous!!!)
