Headphones mic broken, can I just cut them off?

I need to make a call desperately but I need to use my headphones. Sadly my microphone is broken and I can't call without my iPad picking it up as a working microphone and not using my iPad's microphone.

Is there anyway to fix this? If I literally take a pair of scissors and cut off the wire of the right ear bud, will it work normally again? I'm really really really desperate.
