This is the first time I'm travelling with my Iphone 5s, and I can't connect my iphone 5s to any carrier abroad (voice roaming).
My sim card works in my home country, and my sim card works abroad in an Iphone 5.
the settings of the 5s don't seem to be off. Any ideas?

yes I have, and my current sim card I have tried abroad in an Iphone 5 and that does connect to a partner carrier. It has been confirmed that I have roaming setup.
Try a reset of iPhone
hold home/sleep buttons until Apple logo appears
no data will be lost
and check the Apple doc link abovesomething may spring out
