Phone is barred - does that mean I can't track it

My iPhone 5 got stolen, so I reported this to my network provider and they have barred both my phone and sim. First of all, I would like to know what this actually means? If they were able to guess my passcode, I assume they have access to my music, photos etc but won't be able to use the internet or text/call.

Secondly, does this mean that I won't be able to track it when they turn it on, since it won't be able to use the internet.

Another option on find my iPhone is to erase the phone - does this mean that the thief will now have a blank phone and will be able to use it as their own if they are able to unbar it? However, if I don't erase the phone, is there a chance that they may be able to use my apple account to buy things if they did manage to guess my passcode and unbar the phone?

Sorry if these are obvious questions - any help would be appreciated!

In order to track or erase the phone using find my iphone - the phone needs to be connected to cellular data or wifi.

If you passcode protect your phone your data should be safe unless they figure out the password.

If somehow the thief restore your phone they won't be able to use it:

Barring the phone just means they won't be able to get service from your carrier. You're right, it won't be able to get a cellular connection, but if it connects to a previously joined Wi-Fi network you may be able to track it.

If you erase it, your data will be wiped but they still won't be able to activate the phone without your Apple ID and password. If you don't erase it, the phone will become disabled after 10 incorrect passcode attempts.

Okay, thanks.

So it sounds to me that erasing it is the safest bet as they shouldn't be able to use the phone and it would probably give me better peace of mind.

Just one more question - if they happened to be very tech smart, is there a way they can use my phone despite all this protection in place?

Unless they are very good at guessing your apple id and password.

Change your apple id password.
