How to sync iCal between iPhone 5S and MBP (Retina) without losing data?

I have two active Apple products - an iPhone 5S, and a MBP 13" Retina.

I would like to sync the iCals on these two devices - but the last time I tried to do so, the syncing process deleted some of my (very important) data from my MBP and basically wiped off everything to replace it with the data from my iPhone's iCal (which I wasn't using).

My active iCal is the one on on my laptop - how can I sync it and make sure that I'm not going to lose my data from my MBP's iCal?

My questions

  1. Is there a way to back-up my iCal on my MBP in case syncing it erases all of my appointments?
  2. Is there a way to make sure that my data on my MBP is not wiped off, and it is the one that will be reflected across my devices?

Hi connietanms,

Here is an article that will help you back up your iCal data:

I would recommend that you back up your iPhone as well:

iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes

Here is one more article that will help you finalize this procedure and will give you the best steps to importing your iCal events into iCloud so they can be synced to both of your devices:

iCloud: Manually importing data from Calendar or iCal to iCloud Calendar
